How to access your files from outside thelab@langford |
 |
Need to access your SCC files from Langford? Click
here to learn how.
Your files are accessible from outside of this lab through the use of
Mapping a Network Drive. You must be behind A&M's
firewall in order for this to work. This means you must be using a computer on campus,
a computer dialed in to A&M's modem bank, or a computer connected to A&M through VPN.
For more information on VPN*, visit either of the following links as it pertains to you:
PPTP for Windows XP
PPTP for Mac OSX
*Note: Due to unreliability and flakiness of the software, thelab@langford does not support the use of the Cisco VPN client mentioned
in any of the "official" CIS documentation.
Before attempting to connect to your folders with either of
these methods, make sure that you can successfully logon to
the computers in the Langford Computing Center.
Mapping a Network Drive
To map a network drive, right-click on "My Computer" on your desktop
and choose "Map Network Drive". You will see something similar to the dialog box below.

There are four inputs to be concerned with: Drive, Folder, Reconnect at logon,
and Connect using a different user name. The drive letter can be anything
you want it to be. For folder, type
"\\xavier.arch.ad.tamu.edu\home\<username>" (without the quotes), where <username> is
your username for the Langford Computing Center. There are a
number of different shares you can connect to besides your home drive. Replace what you type
for folder with the appropriate share as listed below to connect to these different
resources. Do not use the quotes for any of these.
- "\\xavier.arch.ad.tamu.edu\classes" - All COA Class folders
- "\\xavier.arch.ad.tamu.edu\network temp" - Network Temp
You can check
Reconnect at logon if you wish Windows to reestablish this connection
every time you use that computer.
Clicking different user name will bring
up the dialog box to the right.
For User name, type "ARCH\<username>"
(without the quotes), where <username> is the logon ID you use in the
Langford Computing Center. Then type your password that you use
in the Langford Computing Center and click "OK".
You will be taken back to the previous dialog box, where you can now
click "Finish". If you did everything correctly, the dialog box
will close and a window will open showing you your folders and files.
FTP Access
For security reasons, FTP access is no longer supported.

Common Problems
- You must type "ARCH\" before your user name.
- You must use the user name and password you use in the Langford Computer Center. This is completely independent of any account you may have through CIS for their Open Access Labs.
- Make sure the CAPS LOCK is not on when you type your password.
- If your login attempt was unsuccessful several times in a row, your account may be locked out, and you will have to come to the helpdesk in Langford A122 to have your account unlocked.
